Community Canvas: Representing Growth in Gulfton & Sharpstown
New walls, new energy! I’m excited to bring some vibrant color to the southwest side of Houston at Connect Highstar. A huge shoutout to Piper Faust Public Art and Connect Community for inviting me to be a part of this project. This isn’t just about paint; it’s deeply rooted in community, culture, and amplifying the diverse voices that truly define the Gulfton and Sharpstown neighborhoods.
Connect Community has been tirelessly working to uplift this area, and their Textile Lab & Entrepreneurship Center is a major step forward. This 9,000-square-foot space is dedicated to supporting local entrepreneurs, creating jobs, and providing essential resources for the community to thrive. I’m honored to add my visual voice to this mission with a mural that embodies the incredible energy and resilience of the people here.
The canvas for this piece is substantial: a wall 25 feet long and 12 feet high – prime real estate for a bold statement. I’m approaching this mural with a slightly different flow, letting the unique characteristics of the space and the people around it guide the final composition. My goal is to capture the dynamic movement, the rich cultural tapestry, and the powerful ambition of a neighborhood that’s constantly evolving.
Gulfton, often called the “Ellis Island of Houston,” is a place of incredible history and transformation, with over 50 languages spoken and a legacy of welcoming new communities. It’s a hub of hustle and growth. That’s the profound energy I’m channeling into this artwork a piece designed to honor its past while looking vibrantly toward its future.
